Medicare Advantage in South Florida: Independent Guidance for Choosing the Right Plan

Choosing a Medicare Advantage plan shouldn't feel like being pushed toward whichever product an agent happens to sell.

At Strategic Investment Services, we take a different approach.

Because we are independent and work with multiple insurance companies, we can help clients and prospective clients compare Medicare Advantage options from the companies we represent and evaluate which available plan may better fit their individual needs.

Your Medicare needs aren't one-size-fits-all. Neither should your Medicare guidance be.

What Is Medicare Advantage?

Medicare Advantage, also called Medicare Part C, is an alternative way to receive your Medicare Part A and Part B benefits through a private insurance company approved by Medicare.

Depending on the plan, Medicare Advantage coverage may also include prescription drug coverage and additional benefits such as dental, vision, hearing, fitness programs and other supplemental services.

Plan benefits, premiums, provider networks, prescription coverage and out-of-pocket costs can vary significantly.

That is why comparing your options matters.

Why Being Independent Matters

Some insurance representatives primarily or exclusively work with one insurance company.

We don't believe one company's products are automatically the right answer for everyone.

As an independent firm, Strategic Investment Services works with multiple Medicare Advantage insurance companies. That allows us to look at different available options from the carriers we represent instead of starting with a predetermined product.

The process begins with you.

We look at factors such as:

  • Your doctors and specialists

  • Preferred hospitals

  • Prescription medications

  • Preferred pharmacies

  • Healthcare needs

  • Monthly premiums

  • Copayments and coinsurance

  • Maximum out-of-pocket costs

  • Travel habits

  • Dental, vision and hearing needs

  • Other benefits that are important to you

We can then help you compare available plans and understand the differences.

The objective isn't to sell the same Medicare Advantage plan to everyone.

It's to help identify an available plan that fits your individual circumstances and priorities.

There Is No Single “Best” Medicare Advantage Plan

People often ask, “What is the best Medicare Advantage plan?”

The answer depends on the person.

One plan may have a strong network for one individual's doctors but not another's.

Another plan may offer attractive additional benefits but have prescription drug coverage that doesn't work as well for someone taking several medications.

Someone who rarely travels may have different priorities than a retiree who spends several months each year outside South Florida.

That's why we believe Medicare Advantage should be approached individually.

Instead of asking:

“What plan should we sell?”

We ask:

“What does this person actually need?”

We Help Compare Medicare Advantage Plans

Sorting through Medicare plans by yourself can be confusing.

We help simplify the process by reviewing available Medicare Advantage plans from the insurance companies we represent.

Our Medicare Advantage assistance may include helping you:

  • Compare available plans

  • Check whether your doctors are in-network

  • Review preferred hospitals

  • Check prescription drug coverage

  • Compare pharmacies

  • Understand premiums and deductibles

  • Compare copays and coinsurance

  • Review maximum out-of-pocket limits

  • Understand HMO and PPO differences

  • Review additional benefits

  • Understand Medicare enrollment periods

  • Complete enrollment in the plan you select

We can also explain the differences in plain English so you understand what you're enrolling in.

Medicare Advantage HMO vs. PPO

One important decision may be whether an HMO or PPO Medicare Advantage plan better fits your situation.

Medicare Advantage HMO Plans

HMO plans generally rely more heavily on a specific provider network. Except in certain situations such as emergencies, using providers outside the network may not be covered.

Some HMO plans may also require referrals for specialist care.

Medicare Advantage PPO Plans

PPO plans generally offer more flexibility when choosing healthcare providers.

Members may be able to receive covered services from out-of-network providers, although their costs may be higher than when using participating providers.

Neither type is automatically better.

Your doctors, expected healthcare usage, travel habits and preference for flexibility can all influence which option makes more sense.

Your Doctors and Prescriptions Matter

Two of the most important things we can review are often the simplest:

Who are your doctors?

And:

What medications do you take?

These details can make a major difference when comparing plans.

A Medicare Advantage plan with appealing benefits may not be a good fit if an important physician isn't in the network.

Likewise, prescription drug formularies and costs can differ among plans.

That's why we believe a Medicare review should involve more than simply comparing premiums.

Medicare Advantage Plans Can Change Every Year

Even if you're happy with your existing Medicare Advantage plan, that doesn't necessarily mean you should automatically keep it forever without reviewing it.

Insurance companies may change:

  • Premiums

  • Copayments

  • Drug formularies

  • Provider networks

  • Pharmacy networks

  • Additional benefits

  • Other plan provisions

Your life may change too.

You may start taking new medications, begin seeing a new specialist, travel more frequently or simply have different healthcare needs than you did a few years ago.

An annual review can help determine whether your existing plan still fits your needs.

When Can You Change Medicare Advantage Plans?

Medicare has specific enrollment periods.

The Annual Medicare Open Enrollment Period runs from October 15 through December 7 each year.

During this period, eligible Medicare beneficiaries can generally make changes to their Medicare health or prescription drug coverage for the following year.

There is also a Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period from January 1 through March 31 for individuals who are already enrolled in Medicare Advantage.

Certain life events may also create a Special Enrollment Period.

Because Medicare enrollment rules can vary depending on the situation, we can help you understand when you may be eligible to enroll or make a change.

Turning 65? We Can Help You Get Started

If you're approaching your 65th birthday, you may suddenly find yourself receiving Medicare advertisements from seemingly everywhere.

That doesn't necessarily make the decision easier.

We can help you understand:

  • How Medicare works

  • Medicare Parts A and B

  • Medicare Advantage

  • Prescription drug coverage

  • Your enrollment timeline

  • Available Medicare Advantage plans from the companies we represent

  • How your doctors and prescriptions affect your decision

Starting the process before your Medicare coverage begins can give you more time to compare your choices instead of feeling pressured into a last-minute decision.

Local Medicare Advantage Help in South Florida

Medicare Advantage is highly dependent on where you live.

Plans and provider networks available in Miami-Dade County and South Florida can be different from those available elsewhere in Florida.

Working with someone who understands the local market can therefore be valuable.

Strategic Investment Services helps Medicare beneficiaries throughout South Florida understand and compare available Medicare Advantage options from the insurance companies we represent.

We're proud to be a trusted local resource for Medicare Advantage guidance in South Florida.

And because we're independent, our starting point isn't an insurance company's product.

It's the client.

Already Have Medicare Advantage? Let Us Review It

You don't need to be turning 65 to benefit from a Medicare review.

If you already have Medicare Advantage, we can help review your existing coverage and compare it with available alternatives during an applicable enrollment period.

Some useful questions include:

  • Are all my important doctors still in-network?

  • Are my medications still covered?

  • Have my copayments increased?

  • Are my preferred hospitals still participating?

  • Have my benefits changed?

  • Are there other plans available that may better fit my current needs?

Sometimes your existing plan may still be appropriate.

If that's the case, that's useful information too.

The purpose of a review should be to make an informed decision—not to change plans simply for the sake of changing them.

Independent Medicare Guidance Starts With You
